Even if you are failing this class, if you can earn an A or a B on this assignment, that will bring you up to passing. IF YOU ARE DOING WELL AND MISS THIS ASSIGNMENT, YOU MOST LIKELY WILL NOT PASS THE TERM.

Dear Awesome Student,
How did Term 1 go for you in our class? If you did well - what are your personal habits that contributed to this? If you didn't do well, or as well as you had hoped - what barriers were in your way that you could not control? How can I help? What DO you have control over that you can change from now on?
In terms of skills - What did you learn? What do you know how to do now that you didn't before you started this class? In what areas have you improved? Where are you still confused? Do you think the skills we've been focusing are important? Why or why not?
How's "The Crucible" going for you? What kinds of issues does it make you think more deeply about? Do you find our discussions in class interesting?
Ideally, class will be a pretty equal mix of voices. You guys have also been utilizing the chat to weigh in on discussion, which has been great. How has your own participation been? What can I do to better support your participation?
How else can I and Ms. Johnson better support you? Term Two begins on Monday - think of how it can be better, and how you can take control.
Sincerely,
Ms. T

These instructions and an online version of the book were not given to all students in June like I thought they were. I'm sorry about that; I don't know why everyone did not have access. Therefore the assignment below is extra credit. Excellent work to those who already emailed their finished assignments to me - I hope you had fun and that it helped push your thinking about the characters and the story.
Read The Green Mile, by Stephen King (buy on Amazon for $1 or read the PDF below)
Write a series of 10 letters between two characters of your choice - five letters per character.
Each letter should be about a page each handwritten or one page typed / double spaced.
Some things to think about:
- Why are these characters writing letters to each other?
- Would it be dangerous if someone found out?
- What secrets would these characters share? How would they respond to each other?
- What's the relationship? Is this a friendship, a romance, a forbidden romance of some kind, a father-son or brothers relationship?
- Don't forget to date each letter and include salutations: "Dear __, Love, __" etc.
Step into these characters' shoes. It should be clear from the tone of these letters what their relationship is, and maybe even what their education level is - maybe one of the characters isn't very good at writing, for example, and the other one is well-educated. Have fun with it!

What do you think? Go to the "Affirmative!" or the "Negative!" Google Doc!
Due:

Due:
Write a Level 1, 2, & 3 question using the reading from today's class. Label them.
Due:
Find the best paper you wrote for a past English class. Maybe it's a paper from last year, maybe the year before. What matters is that it's the BEST example of your writing that you have. You may have to look through Google Docs for this, through your email, or through your room if you printed it out the old-fashioned way :)
Reread as if it's not your own - as if you're reading someone else's work, with a critical eye. Then, write a 2-3 page letter to me about what you notice. (Typed, double-spaced, size 12. If you have neat handwriting and prefer to hand-write it, that's okay too.) Assess your writing and specify what you need to focus on this year using the format below.
Make sure to attach BOTH the paper and the letter & look over the attached rubric.
Ms. T
P.S. If you CANNOT find a past paper anywhere, write the best paragraph you can on the question below, THEN assess / reflect on that in your letter:
Question: Which character in The Crucible has the most difficult conflict, and why? Use claim-evidence-analysis structure.
